West Australian Music (WAM) is proud to announce that Jebediah, one of the most successful and beloved bands to come out of the West Australian music scene will this year be inducted into the WAM Hall of Fame, to be presented at the WA Music Awards (WAM Awards) on Thursday 16 November at the Regal Theatre as part of WA Music Month 2023.
Each year, WAM recognises the contribution of influential members of the West Australian music community by inducting them into the WAM Hall of Fame.
Jebediah – Kevin Mitchell (vocals/guitar), Brett Mitchell (drums), Vanessa Thornton (bass) and Chris Daymond(guitar) – will join an esteemed list that also includes the likes of Bon Scott, The Farriss Brothers, Tim Minchin, Suze DeMarchi, The Pigram Brothers, The Waifs, Philip Stevens, Sue Hammersley, Martyn P. Casey, Rick Steele, The Triffids, The Stems, Johnny Young and The Scientists.
“It’s really, really nice,” Kevin Mitchell says. “I guess with an award like this it’s not necessarily something you’re thinking about during your career, but when they happen it feels good. I think as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned to appreciate it a lot more as well.
“Looking back I feel we’ve had such a such a good relationship with WA. WA has been so supportive of us for such a long time. That’s what it really kind of brings to mind for me, is just the support and the goodwill. That’s just always been there ever since I was a teenager when we first started and now I’m about to be 46-year-old. A lot of time has passed, and that supportive goodwill has never ever wavered. That’s something that I feel like celebrating.”
First formed in 1995, Jebediah won the National Campus Band Competition on their 13th gig, in October 1995. Soon after they signed to Sony Music offshoot label Murmur (alongside Silverchair, Something For Kate and Ammonia) and were catapulted out of the moshpits and onto the main stage of the exploding ’90s festival scene. Songs such as Leaving Home, Jerks Of Attention, Harpoon, Teflon, Animal, Fall Down and many more became radio staples and live favourites
Their albums Slightly Odway (1997), Of Someday Shambles (1999), Jebediah (2002), Braxton Hicks (2004)and Kosciusko consistently reached the upper echelons of the ARIA Album Chart and to this day Jebediah are one of Australia’s most energetic and beloved live acts.
Hot on the heels of the WAM Hall of Fame Induction Jebediah are set to release Gum Up The Bearings, the first new song the band have put out in over a decade, and a raucous reclamation of everything that made Jebediah a household name of Australian indie rock. They will celebrate its release with a run of shows around the country.
As part of WAMFest Friday, Jebediah will perform on Friday, November 17, at The Rechabite, Northbridge. Tickets are on sale now via the WAMFest website.
