Mentorship & Professional Development

WAM INDUSTRY WORKSHOPS

WAM’s long-running industry workshop program focuses on skills development and networking within the sector.

Designed to support, up-skill and inform individuals involved in the WA music scene – these workshops cover a wide range of topics including music business, marketing, songwriting, production, copyright, funding, and more.

Whether you’re an emerging artist, industry professional, or aspiring music worker, WAM’s workshops offer practical advice, networking opportunities, and insights from experienced local and national experts to help you navigate and grow within the music industry.

ARTIST MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

In conjunction with the conference and showcase events for WA Music Week, WAM has launched a new program in 2025 that seeks to work with a select group of artists who are ready to take the next step in their careers and can benefit from curated support and mentorship.

The program’s objective is to provide customised support to emerging artists to equip them with additional skills and knowledge to take advantage of national exposure and opportunities.

Up to ten artists are selected annually by a small panel of industry experts from an open application process. In 2025 the mentorship will run for a total of 6 months centred around WA Music Week, although in future years this will be an 8-month long program.

Selected artists are interviewed and assessed to determine the types and levels of support required, which WAM then deliver through multiple mechanisms. This includes custom workshops, 1:1 skills sessions, funding advice, business coaching, media opportunities, networking, and meetings with national music industry representatives.

RESIDENCIES

Through our partnership with the Fremantle Foundation, WAM runs two programs that provide targeted support for emerging WA musicians.

The Felix Burrows Music Residency is two three-month residencies each year that includes a fully equipped studio space at Goolugatup Heathcote, and thanks to the Felix Culpa Fund and the Fremantle Foundation each residency includes $5,000 for the artist in residence.

The programme is named in recognition and remembrance of Felix Burrows. Felix was a beloved local musician and artist, playing drums in bands such as The Feast of Snakes and Darling Rangers. The Felix Burrows Music Residency forms a fitting tribute to the legacy and creativity of this generous, energetic and widely-loved local artist.

In 2025 we announced a new initiative for young songwriters as part of the Song of the Year competition. ‘A Song for Sophie’ is an award developed in honour of local music enthusiast and artist Sophie Smith, and is possible thanks to the Sophie Smith Fund, held with the Fremantle Foundation.

‘A Song for Sophie’ is a unique, free additional category, which Song of the Year entrants under 25, can optionally enter to be judged by a specialist panel, as part of the Song of the Year Competition. The winner will receive a cash prize of $2500 and an exclusive mentoring program with a renowned local artist.
