Advocacy

WAM’S SECTOR ADVOCACY

WAM is committed to strengthening its relationship with the contemporary music sector by taking a bold yet pragmatic approach to public advocacy and engagement with key decision makers.

Each year, we reaffirm our role as a trusted source of advice and sector insight for local, state, and federal governments, working collaboratively on initiatives and reforms that will advance contemporary music and the broader creative industries.

In our renewed form, WAM has already taken significant steps forward. Following sustained engagement with government stakeholders, the State Government has announced increased funding support for contemporary music, a major milestone driven in part by WAM’s advocacy efforts.

WAM has also played an active role in shaping major policy and infrastructure developments. We have been closely involved in the planning of the Northbridge Entertainment Precinct, appointed to the design working group for the Burswood Sports and Entertainment Precinct, and have been a key contributor to consultations on the revised Contemporary Music Fund model led by the Department of Culture and the Arts (DCITS).

Throughout the year, WAM will continue to advocate on critical issues identified through stakeholder feedback and research. These include challenges around noise regulation and sustainability for live music venues, expanding income opportunities for artists, and improving access to professional development.

To maintain our position as a credible and trusted voice, we are committed to deep and consistent engagement within the sector. This includes convening our new Sector Advisory Committee and holding regular consultations with working groups and industry representatives.

Looking ahead, WAM aims to expand its advocacy through focused research that supports evidence-based policy and program development. Priority areas for upcoming research include audience development and the prevention of gendered violence in the music industry, both of which are critical to the long-term health and inclusivity of our sector.
