West Australian Music and Goolugatup Heathcote invite Expressions of Interest from West Australian musicians, songwriters, composers, producers – anyone working in the realm of music – to be considered for the one of our forthcoming Residency placements. At present, two residencies are offered each year, each being for a three month period.
The program welcomes applications from musical artists of any kind, whether emerging or established. Please note the residency is designed for individuals, not groups – though collaborative activity is welcome. The program aims to foster creative practices, and as such, is geared towards original music.
Preference will be given to applicants who:
(1) Demonstrate proven ability to produce musical work of an excellent standard;
(2) Exemplify a musical approach that is unique or inventive, representing a distinctive contribution to the arts community in WA and beyond;
(3) Can express how they will specifically benefit or further their artistic practice through the development opportunities offered by the residency.
The program’s central focus is to support professional growth and development for local musicians, by offering the space, time, and resources to experiment, develop / produce work, and make meaningful connections. On top of free access to a well equipped studio space on site at Goolugatup Heathcote, the resident artist will also receive a stipend of $5,000. Residency artists are selected by panel assessment.
Applications from regional artists are encouraged, and by negotiation, there is potential for residential accommodation to be provided as an additional incentive.
About the Residency program
The Felix Burrows Music Residency program is a twice-yearly funded residency based at Goolugatup Heathcote. No fixed outcome is required by the program – however, musicians in residence are invited to consider options for public presentation, and may wish to perform resulting work at the gallery’s Goolugatup Sounds concert programme, or to share outcomes from their residency via other platforms facilitated by Goolugatup and/or WAM.
The residency programme has been established to promote the interests and talents of WA musical artists, and the current funding attached to each residency is thanks to the generosity of the family of Felix Burrows, through the Fremantle Foundation. Felix was a beloved local musician, playing drums in bands such as The Feast of Snakes and Darling Rangers. Felix was also a prolific visual artist and passionate force in the local cinema community. Since his tragic and untimely passing in 2018, Felix’s life and artistic work have been continually celebrated by friends, family and peers. The Felix Burrows Music Residency forms a fitting tribute to the legacy and creativity of this generous, energetic and widely-loved local artist.
