The Search for WA’s Best Songs Returns With Over $45,000 in Prizes!

Returning to celebrate exceptional WA songwriting, WAM Song of the Year 2017/18 is now open for submissions until Monday 12 February 11:59 pm Thursday 15 February.

The state-wide search for WA’s best songs offers over $45,000 worth of prizes to songwriters of all ages, levels and genres. With this year’s competition now open to published works, there are even more opportunities for local songwriters to have their work heard by leading music industry judges.


WAM Song of the Year 2017-18

All WA songwriters are encouraged to apply, with 16 diverse categories each offering winners a $500 cash prize, studio time with WA’s best, a double pass to WAMCon 2018 and more. Category winners are all in the running for the grand prize package, which includes:

  •  $3,000 cash
  • A two-day recording and production session with one of West Australia’s most high-profile producers and recent Best Sound Engineer/ Producer (studio) WAMAward winner, Andy Lawson of Debaser Studios
  • The opportunity for a publishing & sync licensing deal with Perfect Pitch Publishing, plus an online tutorial in publishing and licensing and ongoing industry mentoring
  • 100 x 7 inch records, on black vinyl with a full colour sleeve and sticker, pressed courtesy of Rhubarb Records and XVinylX
  • A national media servicing campaign for a single or release through Firestarter Distribution
  • The new RØDE AI-1 complete home studio recording microphone package worth over $1,00
  • $1,100 towards your next CD pressing plus one year’s worth of digital distribution from Diskbank

  • Two-week radio ad campaign from RTRFM
  • Expert branding and digital marketing assessment and consultation from renown Sydney-based digital agency director, Vanessa Picken, from Comes With Fries
  • A state-of-the-art Headphonic headphones package
  • Cool Perth Nights golden ticket which offers access to all Cool Perth Night’s shows for two months
  • 4 x 6-month Spotify subscriptions for you and your fellow songwriters
  • $1,200 gift voucher for Custom in-ear monitors from Audiofly
  • A guaranteed prime spot on the 2018 WAMFest line-up
  • Four passes to WAMCon 2018 (which also provides access to all WAMFest Live paid showcases, plus the infamous QuayNote boat networking event!).

All winners will be announced at the Awards Party, debuting at the iconic, Gold Rush era hall-turned live music venue the Fly by Night Club in High Street, Fremantle on Wednesday 16 May.

The 16 categories will honour gifted WA songwriters from all genres such as Blues/Roots, Country, Electronic, Experimental, Folk, Jazz, Metal/Heavy, Punk/Hardcore, Pop, Rock, Urban/Hip Hop and World, plus extra categories for Schools (14 Years & Under), Schools (15-17), Outstanding Indigenous and Outstanding Regional.
From the brightest emerging talent to proven legends, WAM Song of the Year offers WA-based songwriters of all levels priceless exposure and vital recognition by Australian radio and media.


Entering WA’s biggest songwriting competition is easy! Just click the link to enter below and you will be taken straight to the entry page. Complete the form, upload your songs, and submit. We’re always here if you get stuck, though.

A few things to keep in mind before entering:

  • All songwriters (including all band members) must be based in WA for the majority of the past 12 months to be eligible.
  • You can submit the same song more than once in different categories, your songs can be previously published works, but your song has to be an original work. If you would like to know more here’s a link to the terms and conditions.
  • The entry fee for WAM members is $33 for three entries and $33 for each entry after that. For non-WAM members the entry fee is $44 per entry. To become a WAM member, signup here:
