Legal Deposit Act up for review

4 Jun

The Legal Deposit Act passed through parliament in May 2012, and this in reality just brings WA in line with the rest of the country. Physical publications have long been required to be deposited with the State Library of WA  and this now extends into digital publication, including music and associated collateral and publications. The provisions of the Act are not in force as yet but will be when the Legal Deposit Regulations 2013 come into effect.

Below is a report on the consultation process and WAM was part of that process. There is still opportunity for comment as part of the regulatory process.

It is really about the process under which collection will be made; that collection will be made is a fait accompli. On the whole this isn’t a bad thing as it serves to preserve WA’s very strong music culture and history. This is simply achieved with music and sheet music. Other digital collateral can be more ephemeral, and what to capture and how is the bigger issue.

You can read it here, and WAM are happy to take on comments or discuss this further.
