The search for WA’s best song draws one step closer as we reveal the impressive pool of nominees for the 2020 Song of the Year competition presented by Act-Belong-Commit. With over 1,100 entries from across the state, the 2020 nominees reflect the immense talent and innovation of WA songwriters primed for celebration at this year’s special edition Virtual Awards Party!

Now in its 30th year, WA’s premier songwriting competition recognises homegrown talent in the craft of songwriting, showcasing the powerful stories and finest songs from artists across the state. This year’s nominees are now in the running for a share of over $45, 000 in prizes donated by generous prize and studio sponsors, and the opportunity to join the star-studded ranks of previous winners Stella Donnelly, Beni Bjah, Kučka, Little Birdy, Abbe May, Carla Geneve, The Waifs and Methyl Ethel.

Following careful consideration and evaluation from a panel of Industry judges, this year’s nominees include an exciting mix of emerging and established artists across all genres, ages, levels and backgrounds (check out the full list below!). The talent throughout WA’s regions shines bright this year, with regional songwriters nominated in 13 of the 17 categories. 2020 also sees a year of multi-nominated songwriters, with three nominations for Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks and Indigo Ellis, and two apiece for Bolt Gun, MissGenius, Sydnee Carter, Brandon Poletti, Jamahl Ryder, Carla Geneve, Tracey Barnett, Noah Dillon, Maddie Mian, Siobhan Cotchin, Kate Pass Kohesia Ensemble, XIII and The Little Lord Street Band.

The winners will be announced during the jam-packed special event, streamed for free on WAM’s Facebook page on Wednesday 29th July 2020. Stay tuned for the upcoming reveals!

InstagramWAM Song of the Year Coordinator, Claire Hodgson, says of the exciting event, “We’re thrilled to be presenting the WAM Song of the Year awards as an online event for the first time in 2020 to help celebrate the craft of songwriting and the immense amount of musical talent that resides in WA, in what’s been a difficult year for the music industry around the globe.

“Now more than ever has been the time to recognise the important role music plays in our lives and to value the efforts of musicians who write original music because of their passion and reverence for the artform. The Song of the Year 2020 virtual awards will recognise some of the best songs to come out of WA from the past year and we hope that you can join us for the party and discover some of your new favourite acts in what’s shaping up to be a great night in!”.

Echoed in the themes of many nominated songs, the message of the competition’s presenting partner, Act-Belong-Commit, has been increasingly important for mental and physical health throughout uncertain times. The songwriting process and returning Act-Belong-Commit category provided songwriters an opportunity to explore mental wellness, the journey for an improved lifestyle and the importance of community and connectedness.

Healthway Acting CEO Jeremy Hubble said that Healthway is proud to be the West Australian Music presenting partner for the 2020 Act-Belong-Commit Song of the Year.

“COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the arts and creative community in WA, and the WAM Song of Year Virtual Awards ceremony is an important way for the artists to connect, and for us to acknowledge their meaningful contribution,” Mr Hubble said. “The Act-Belong-Commit song category nominees this year have beautifully captured the importance of having a strong sense of belonging for positive mental health and wellbeing”.

WAM are excited to extend this opportunity to act, belong and commit to the awards party, with the virtual online format allowing songwriters, artists and music lovers across WA (and the world!) to come together and engage with the celebrations like never before.

With the countdown for the coveted winner reveal now on, it’s time to dive into the impressive songs of this year’s Song of the Year nominees and get a glimpse of the best talent our WA songwriters have on offer!
