Music Industry Icon Don Letts Joins WAMCon Lineup

13 Sep

With an enticing mix of industry powerhouses and published academics already on the lineup, WAM are thrilled to welcome prolific music filmmaker, radio presenter, and international DJ Don Letts to the lineup as our keynote speaker for WAMCon 2018, taking place at the State Theatre Centre of WA from Friday 2 – Saturday 3 November.

Currently presenting the weekly ‘Culture Clash Radio’ show on BBC 6 Music and DJing around the globe, Don first made his mark in the late 70s as the DJ that single handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae.

It was whilst working as a DJ at the first punk club The Roxy in 1977 that he made his first film ‘The Punk Rock Movie’ with the Sex Pistols, The Clash and many others. This led to a period directing over 400 music videos for a diverse mix of artists ranging from Public Image to Bob Marley. Don then moved into documentary work, making films on the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra, The Clash and George Clinton; with his most recent documentary on Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘New’ project.

Along with his autobiography ‘Culture Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers’ released in 2007, Don was also the subject of the documentary film ‘Superstonic Sound: The Rebel Dread’ in 2010.

With decades of industry experience under his belt, we can’t wait to hear more of Don’s story from the icon himself at WAMCon, where he’ll join a diverse mix of expert industry folk with the likes of SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, triple j, 4ZZZ, Way Over There, Chugg Entertainment, Footstomp Music, Bandcamp, Girls Rock!, Perfect Pitch Publishing, Barefoot Bands, Pilerats and more, as well as leading music brains from Queensland University of Technology, the University of Western Australia and Griffith University School of Cultural Research.
