Ever wondered what it takes to start up and run a record label? The four speakers on this panel will be able to answer all of your questions. Why? Because they’ve done it and worked through every imaginable issue related to doing so! If you’ve ever thought about starting a label for your own music or wondered what the real benefits would be for you to sign to one, or to sign others, this is definitely the session for you.

THE SPEAKERS:

Nick O’Byrne (Skype from Melbourne) – General Manager of AIR, Executive Programmer of BIGSOUND, Owner/Manager of Look Out Kid
Nick is currently the General Manager of the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR), a peak industry body based in Melbourne representing the interests of labels, distributors and artists in Australia.Nick is also the Associate Programmer of BIGSOUND, Australia’s largest music industry conference and showcase event and is artist manager for a small roster of Australian artists including Courtney Barnett.

Matthew Johnson – Co-owner of Walking Horse Records.
Matt Johnson started Walking Horse Records in 2009 with close friend Gareth Andersen after cutting his teeth at former WA label Qstik Records.The label focuses on alt-country, folk and indie music and aims to pick up where Qstik left off, providing industry support to local talent. Currently, the Walking Horse stable includes Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo, The Ghost Hotel, Stereoflower and The Morning Night.

Adam Christou
Recently moving from Melbourne to take up the role of Music Director at RTRfm Adam has previously worked as a publicity and project manager at both Remote Control Records and Recon Music – Remote Control’s third party publicity arm. Adam has worked on releases from Queens Of the Stone Age, The National, Zomby, Kirin J Callinan, King Gizzard And the Lizard Wizard and Super Wild Horses. He has also worked on third party campaigns for Jen Cloher, Jeremy Neale, Forces, Seekae, Elizabeth Rose and Audego.

Ash Hosken aka Diger Rokwell is co-founder of The Community which is a collective of music producers, performers and artists from Perth. The Community Records is a vessel for a talented body of music-makers to promote, grow and share their art. All releases are funded by the artists themselves and all royalties go directly back to the people making the music. The label has released music from Mathas, Able8, Ylem, Naik and Diger amongst many other artists.
