Telstra Road to Discovery 2014: Talent Development Program entries open!

9 Jul

The program which links emerging artists with influential figures in the music industry whilst also broadening their audience and increasing their media exposure officially launched again in Sydney on Tuesday 8 July. The launch of Telstra Road to Discovery 2014 featured special performances from Australian artists including the likes of Andy Bull and Ella Hooper. Current winners Christopher Coleman and WA‘s very own folk-indie singer-songwriter Helen Shanahan (who we recently interviewed) also joined sharing some exciting developments.

Underpinning the success of Telstra Road to Discovery is the very heart of the program which includes collaboration mentorship, songwriting and music education opportunities for independent and unsigned Australian songwriters who are passionate about establishing themselves in the music industry. Not only is this years genre agnostic but they have also shifted to 100% original music with even more focus on these very elements.

In addition to the heats, 8 online applicants will be selected to progress through to Boot Camp and the Semi Final. Ten emerging songwriters perform at the Grand Final which produces 2 ultimate equal winners who each receive a 12 month tailored talent development package.

  • Close Tuesday 5 August for the showcase heat at the Fly by Night show which will be held Thursday 14 August.
  • Close Tuesday 23 September for online entries.

More on this year’s Telstra Road program

Six online Songwriting Education lessons will roll out throughout the program and will cover areas of songwriting from turning ideas into songs, title and structure, melody basics and the foundation of lyric writing.

Streamed Masterclasses will run in October and November featuring a range of songwriters and music industry specialists discussing many areas of the industry.

This year Bootcamp will take place in Melbourne with a 3-day intensive series of educational and interactive sessions that cover critical aspects of the music industry, from how the music industry works through to songwriting techniques and running a small business. A priority focus of Bootcamp is Songwriting development and collaboration, in which participants will write with established Australian singer songwriters.

The 2014 Telstra Road Semi Final will be an invite only event, with 16 finalists performing with our house band in a public forum. 10 of these 16 finalists then progress to the Final at The Forum, Melbourne in November. The Judging Panel consists of 4-5 Music Industry specialists.

The Final consists of past and current winners plus established delivering a showcase of emerging Australian music talent – a show that the program has become renowned for. Finalists are again accompanied by the Telstra Road house band with each of the 10 Finalists performing 2 original songs in full concert mode.

Ultimately 2 winners will be awarded a bespoke 12 month talent development and mentorship package that includes performance, songwriting and marketing development, studio recording time, local and international gigs including a return trip to Nashville USA, yearlong access to key music industry personnel for career development discussion and work-shopping.
