PROJECT ALOFT STAR: Last chance to WIN $12,000 in original music comp
Project Aloft Star is a competition primed to kick-start the careers of budding musicians and bands, launching in Australia for the first time with the final taking place at Aloft Perth. Project Aloft Star, amplified by MTV, is broken into three contest clusters: Australia and Southeast Asia; Greater China and South Korea. The winner of each cluster will receive AUD$12,000 and a Believe Distribution Services Deal for mentorship, marketing and distribution.
With the free entries closing this coming Monday 21 August Midday, WAM’s Aarom Wilson interviewed competition coordinator and Director, Brand & Marketing, Select Brands, Asia-Pacific, Marriott International, Shu Ping Liang.
What inspired Aloft to start this competition?
Rocking the world since its debut, Aloft Hotels is a trailblazer in the live-music scene world by providing upcoming musicians with a platform to perform and get recognised. Project Aloft Star began in 2008 to further our commitment to supporting self-expression by identifying the latest emerging music talent around the world. The response from musicians and fans to Project Aloft Star has been tremendous and the competition is a highly anticipated event that’s become well known across the globe. We are thrilled to partner with MTV in Asia over the last four years, who has been instrumental in amplifying our efforts across their platforms and spotlighting the local up-and-coming talents from the competition on a regional scale. We can’t wait to see how this competition picks up with Australia talents added into the line-up!
What are some of the successes that have been experienced by previous winners that the comp has helped propel?
The competition is a platform for emerging artists, and past Project Aloft Star winners have achieved further success. Last year’s Southeast Asia cluster winner, Soph Retief, produced and released her first music video “Guys Like You”, the song that clinched her win and performed at the Tunbridge Wells festival in July this year. Wang Dazhi (a.k.a. Big Tattoo), winner of the Greater China cluster in 2016, appeared on hip hop reality show ‘Rap of China’, and was the special guest at well-known Chinese rocker Cui Jian’s 30th anniversary concert. The winner of the Southeast Asia cluster in 2014, GTXperiment from Malaysia, won the “Best Collaboration” award at the VIMA Music Awards 2017, and their single “Terus Menunggu” reached local free-to-air channel, TV3 Muzik Muzik charts.
Aligning with the recent opening of the Aloft Perth hotel, it’s the first time Australian acts can enter. Competing also against acts from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, what can the selected Aus act (and punters!) expect from the Final?
We’re excited to be discovering new talents this year by opening up entries to include Australian acts and timing it so that it also showcases the newly opened Aloft Perth – a design-led hotel that’s become an urban-inspired gathering place for savvy Next Gen travelers and locals who value self-expression and connectivity, as well as a go-to for live local music in Perth. At the final, the four shortlisted contestants will perform in front of a live audience and a panel of judges from Aloft Hotels, MTV and the music entertainment industry. Get ready for a whole new experience of live entertainment all night long!
Apart from the main prizes, MTV has also backed it – what kind of opportunities or support might that lead to?
As an iconic youth entertainment brand known for its deep connection to music and pop culture and a strong social presence, MTV will provide the Project Aloft Star finalists and winner with invaluable exposure. In addition, through the collaboration with MTV, the winner will receive a Believe Distribution Services Deal for mentorship, marketing and distribution. Believe Distribution Services is a global heavyweight in the music industry with 32 offices around the world so this is a great opportunity to propel the winner into the music industry.
You’re looking for original and acoustic acts, but are there any types or genres of acts the comp is looking at particularly exposing, or avoiding?
Together with our partner MTV who shares our same passion for live music, we aim to discover and promote local up-and-coming talents and celebrate new music experiences across Asia Pacific. This is especially when millennials show a voracious appetite for media – not only consuming more, but different kinds of music genres.
Live acts have started playing at Aloft Perth – tell us about what’s happening there, and how other appropriate acts might be able to get involved?
Aloft Perth is committed to cutting-edge music programming, leading the way as an industry innovator by supporting live acts in its hotel through its Live at Aloft Hotels music program held every Friday night at its buzzing W XYZ Bar. Finals will be held from October to November 2017. The four finalists from the South East Asia and Australia cluster will battle it out at Aloft Perth on 20 October in front of a live audience and a panel of judges from Aloft, MTV and the music entertainment industry.
