Girls Rock! WA Jan 2020 camp and Rockumentary Announced
WAM is excited to announce the third Girls Rock! WA Camp in January 2020 and release of the Girls Rock! WA Rockumentary celebrating 1 year of the Girls Rock! WA Program.
The Girls Rock! program, which originated in the US and is now practised successfully around the globe, is a week-long day camp of instrumental instruction, band rehearsals, workshops, and fun activities designed to empower and inspire aspiring young female, trans, and non-binary musicians. The program tackles the issue of gender imbalance in the music industry with a focus on the key areas of creativity, positivity, community and empowerment.
The Girls Rock! WA Program was established by WAM in January 2019 under the direction of WAM Audience Development Officer and Girls Rock! WA Co-ordinator, Em Burrows. The program continues with the support of WAM’s core funding partners Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Lotterywest and APRA AMCOS plus funding from the Contemporary Music Fund to deliver Girls Rock! over the next four years. 2019 saw the roll-out of the first two Girls Rock! WA camps with over 50 campers and 100 volunteers from the local music community taking part in January and October.
The third instalment of the Girls Rock! WA camp in January 2020 will feature a range of specialty workshops including Zine making, learning to coordinate a live music event and behind the scenes tour of RTR FM. Campers will continue to be inspired and entertained throughout lunch with performances from Special guests including Priscilla, Lana Rothnie and Cold Meat. The camp will culminate with a showcase performance by all campers at Perth’s newest live music venue, Lyric’s Underground, located in Maylands.
As we move into the second year of the Girls Rock! WA Program, WAM are excited to share the Girls Rock! WA Rockumentary filmed and edited by AWMA and WAM Award winner Tashi Hall during the inaugural January 2019 camp. The documentary follows campers and volunteers through-out the 5-day camp and showcase, providing an insight into the empowering and supportive world that is a Girls Rock! camp experience. Em Burrows said of the documentary:
“Watching the documentary after the camp was really emotional for me. Reflecting on the amazingly inclusive and nurturing space we created and the impact that it had on participants and mentors alike was really special and affirmed just how unique and empowering the Girls rock! program is. Also, who doesn’t want to be in a “rockumentary”?!”
