The Reclink Community Cup, a much loved nation-wide Aussie Rules football charity match that pits musicians against the media, is back for its fourth year in WA. This year’s local edition, The Perth Reclink Community Cup will take place on the hollowed grounds of Fremantle Oval, Sunday September 9th.

From its humble pub-led beginnings, the event is now a hugely successful event on Melbourne’s annual musical (and sporting) calendar. The Community Cups’ achievements are now being replicated right around the country, with community radio stations and local media in each state going head to head with local musicians in a family friendly, entertaining day of grassroots football and live music.

“The Reclink Community Cup is the one day of the year when Perth’s community radio and local musicians, everyday people, connect and come together to help Reclink Australia raise much needed funds that enable us to deliver sport, recreation and arts programs, which make a huge difference to the lives of the neediest in our community.” said John Ballis, CEO, Reclink Australia.

The Bandgropers (WA Musicians) will be lead on field by the Tenille Elkins (Elk Bell, APRA AMCOS) and Leon Ewing (Beaverloop, Sonnenmasse), with the coaching calls being made off field by WA music legends, Bob Gordon (former editor of X-Press magazine and Managing Editor, Around the Sound) and Dixie Battersby (former publicist for EMI and friend of every Australian musician that matters).

The Newshounds (Media & Community Organisations) will be led by current WA Treasurer and football tragic Hon Ben Wyatt MLA and RTRFM presenter Marnie Richardson. They will be dutifully coached by Simon Collins (music editor at The West Australian) and Danae Gibson (RTRFM’s talk producer and biggest AFLW fan going around).

The Bandgropers squad includes musicians from Sugar Army, The Tommyhawks, FOAM, The Love Junkies, Little Lord Street Band, Scalphunter and a whole heap more. The star-studded Newshounds include media identities from RTRFM, ABC, Channel 10, Channel 9, Noongar Radio, The Music and Xpress Magazine.

Players will puff and pant across Fremantle Oval in a game which is part fun, part serious and wholly hilarious, before local musicians entertain the masses on this hallowed footy turf. There’ll be tasty food stalls and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on offer.

All profit for the events go to Reclink Australia, who use sport and the arts to enhance the lives of people experiencing disadvantage. Reclink supports some of the community’s most vulnerable and isolated people – those experiencing mental illness, disability, homelessness, substance abuse, addiction and social and economic hardship.

The event is curated by community radio station RTRFM and a Perth Organising Committee which includes Tom Fisher, Jason Cleary, Stuart MacLeod, Chris Dart-Kelly, Martine Linton, Danae Gibson, Steve Handford and Chris Wheeldon.

The Perth Reclink Community Cup is proudly supported by Clancy’s Fish Pub, South Fremantle Football Club, Oztix, Reclink Australia, Stage Left Design, City of Fremantle and your home of footy RTRFM 92.1
