WA Reflections brings the State Library’s collections to life through five innovative documentary short films. Generation Hi-Fi recalls the early days of rock’n’roll in Perth and the weekly event where it all unfolded – The Hi-Fi Club.
Every Saturday afternoon in 1959, thousands of teens descended on Perth’s Embassy Ballroom to dance to live rock ‘n’ roll. It was the beginning of a new era of music and teen culture in the sleepy town on the wrong side of Australia, and it was all thanks to one man, Colin Nichol, the announcer and State President of the HiFi Club.
Short documentary Generation HiFi takes you back to the golden years when Perth’s youth discovered the music, dancing and freedom that was taking the rest of the world by storm. Using Nichol’s personal archives courtesy of the State Library of Western Australia, and featuring interviews with Nichol and two of the HiFi Club’s original musicians, John Hunter and John Mills, Generation HiFi is an enjoyable trip down memory lane, complete with swinging soundtrack from Perth’s original rockers.
