Following the launch of this year’s Song of the Year Competition presented by Act-Belong-Commit, WAM is excited to present a free Jazz Composition Masterclass for local musicians to develop their skills, engage with experts in the community, and learn something new in the lead up to Song of the Year 2020 presented by Act-Belong-Commit!

The session features two of Perth’s most highly regarded contemporary jazz composers and musicians, Gemma Farrell and Dr Mace Francis. The evening will explore the creative process of song-writing and composition, with Farrell and Mace sharing their experiences and discussing advice in the intimate and relaxed setting of Rhubarb Records, Leederville.

The Masterclass is free entry and open to all ages and skill levels. No previous experience or knowledge of jazz composition is required, with musicians and Industry practitioners from all areas welcome. This masterclass is brought to you with the support of our Song of the Year partner Act-Belong-Commit.

Gemma Farrell is a jazz saxophonist, composer, live musician and educator based in Perth. Gemma currently lectures in jazz studies at WAAPA, has worked as the education coordinator and assistant musical director at WAYJO and leads their Young Women in Jazz program. Gemma performs with the award-winning Gemma Farrell Quintet, Artemis Orchestra, MFG and multiple orchestras. More information on Gemma can be located here.

Dr Mace Francis is a multi-award-winning composer, conductor and jazz musician. Since forming the Mace Francis Orchestra (MFO) in 2005, Mace has toured extensively performing and working as a guest composer and conductor in France, Austria and Japan. Mace currently works as the artistic director of WAYJO and has recently completed a PhD exploring site-specific composition. More information on Dr Mace Francis can be located here.
