We interviewed Coin Banks, finding out what he’s been up to, the importance of leaving “your ego and insecurities at the door” when rocking a crowd and more…

After a short hiatus you are back with your new EP “Outside Looking In” and are up for a WAMAward for Best Hip hop act! How does it feel to be back?
Actually, I still feel like I am on hiatus mode haha. I have spent a big portion of the year traveling, still creating music and enjoying life. Honored to be nominated for a WAMAward again, I think this is the first year that you have split Urban and Hip Hop into two categories? I think that was an amazing move by WAM [Why thank you Coin, it is! – WAM].

For those who haven’t heard the new EP what can they expect?
In my opinion it is the best work I have ever put out, working with some of the best producers around the globe, and further developing my sound.

The WAAPA Gospel Choir are playing at this year’s WAMFest Live, what was it like working with them for your latest single?
That was an amazing honor; I still can’t believe I managed to trick them into working with me.

Fave collaboration in Hip Hop history?
Common and J Dilla – I mean, every time they worked together, every song resulted in a timeless hip hop song.

You’re well known for rocking a crowd – what are the important factors in achieving this that you’ll be bringing to the Aloft Star comp?
I think the absolutely most important thing is to connect with the audience. Leave your ego and insecurities at the door; you are there to make the crowd feel something. Eye contact and crowd interaction are very important in my opinion.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given or can give to get ahead in the music industry?
Other than obviously perfecting your craft, I believe the next best thing is to master the social media game. Look at Lil Yachty, the kid is a mastermind when it comes to social media and marketing.

What’s happening for you in the near future? (shows, launches etc coming up? – include date, venue etc)
I picked up the new South Park game on PS4 today, so that will probably keep me busy haha. But for real, I have a couple of projects on the way, new music, and hopefully a few shows to follow.

The Project Aloft Star final is THIS Friday. Get ready to watch 4 finalists battle it out before a panel of judges at the Aloft Hotel in Perth.

WAMFest is coming up  1 Wednesday – 5 Sunday November and the annual WAMAwards will be announced Friday 3 November.
