ABC $5mil Fresh Start Fund | Australian Music Fund Applications Open!

28 Apr

Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has opened applications for their $5 million development fund to provide urgent and critical support to independent Australian producers and safeguard local content and creativity during these unprecedented times. The ABC’s Fresh Start Fund aims to support the sustainability and growth of Australia’s production industry during the COVID-19 shutdown and supercharge the development of new Australian content for audiences across multiple genres.

The $5 million fund is split across five streams targeting different cultural industries and content types, including;

Enhanced Development & Production Fund
Innovation Fund
Arts Digital Fund
Children’s Content Fund
Australian Music Fund.

The Australian Music Fund stream is designed to offer practical support to emerging, underrepresented and professional Australian musicians and composers, in conjunction with existing initiatives across ABC national music networks. The stream features three initiatives, including opportunities for commissioned work for ABC programs, commissioned pieces for ABC Jazz airplay and genre and artist grants for emerging acts.

triple j Unearthed Music Grants

Replacing triple j Unearthed’s usual festival prizes with grants around a range of genres and themes.

  • 5 x genre grants (dance, hip hop, heavy, bands, solo).
  • 8 x regional artist grants (six states, two territories).
  • 2 x Indigenous artist grants.

Grant applications open on Thursday 7 May 2020. Go to: for additional information and application forms.

Targeted Music Commissioning

Double J’s Home School of Rock
This fund supports commissioning five artists to film instructional video lessons, to help audiences learn an instrument or improve your skills with an artist you love.

triple j Hack Themes and Bed Music
This fund supports commissioning five artists to compose and record new Hack imaging, breakers and bed music for radio packages. Artists commissioned would receive feedback from triple j and support from ABC music production teams to complete recordings (if needed).

Music Program Themes
This fund supports commissioning multiple new compositions and recordings for various ABC music network programs. These include the RN Music Show, Double J specialist music shows, ABC Country and more. Themes can cover a broad range of genres and musical styles to hit a diverse range of Australian artists.  Artists commissioned would receive feedback from ABC Made and access to support from ABC music production teams to complete recordings.

For the music commissioning funds, ABC will identify experienced Australian composers and recording artists working in the industry who will be invited to respond to a creative brief.

This fund supports commissioning and recording of new Australian works that are suitable for extensive airplay on ABC Classic and ABC Jazz.
