SOTA Surrounds will see the State of the Art (SOTA) music festival expand with even MORE musicians, an MC battle, pop-up performances, a food truck market AND a visual art exhibition.Info below, but firstly the playing times…

SOTA 2014 Playtimes_

Presented by Celebrate WA, in partnership with West Australian Music (WAM), SOTA will be hosted at the Perth Cultural Centre on Saturday 31 May as part of the WA Day long weekend celebrations. A new concept for the third annual SOTA festival, SOTA Surrounds is an entirely FREE element that is accessible to all and features more than 40 acts, and it’s so big we couldn’t even include on the above playing times! So here they are;

SOTA Surrounds Pop Up Playtimes

PICA will play host to the newly announced FREE stage dedicated to showcasing both exciting up- and-comers and established acts, as well as a not-to-be-missed SOTA hip-hop battle from the best local MC’s:

SOTA’s West Oz hip hop showcase will see entrants Azmatik, Complete,Two Worlds, Selekt Few, Bryte One, Intellect, A.Saxon, Chani, Bfumes, Intrusive Thoughts, Shadow & Chef, Frenze And Tonight battle it out for the name of SOTA hip- hop champion. The winner will receive great prizes of beats from WA’s best hip hop producers, and studio time at the OptShop.

SOTA Surrounds will also see a collection of over 40 local acts performing free stripped back pop- up sets throughout the festival grounds:

However sounds are not the only free art form on show for this year’s SOTA Surrounds. An exciting live audio-visual exhibition by local artist Kynan Tan will be created at the State Library of Western Australia especially for the festival. The new work, titled hyperthymesia, utilises 5 screens of video and accompanying sound, creating a new representation of Western Australian music through rearranging and reforming the archives of material.

In a stellar line-up of over 80 artists, SOTA also includes 3 paid stages, in which headliners Drapht, Eskimo Joe and San Cisco will be joined by iconic and emerging WA musicians including The Stems, The Blackeyed Susans, The Kill Devil Hills, Kim Salmon, Split Seconds, Bitter Belief, Sable and much more!

As an all-ages event, SOTA will include multiple licensed areas as well as cover and heating throughout, to protect patrons from the elements. Festivalgoers will also be treated to a food truck market, with vendors including Merrywell, Comida De Sol, Ben & Jerry’s, JP Sancho, Jumplings, Jus Burgers, Farmhouse Pizzas and Juice Company providing the best in locally sourced West Australian cuisine.
